ontpelier is the State Capital, and the legislature is bicameral (comprising House and Senate). The current Governor is Jim Douglas, a Republican. Vermont has one representative in the U.S. House of representatives, Bernie Sanders, an Independent, and two U.S. senators, Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, and Jim Jeffords, an Independent.

Bernie Sanders, Member U.S. House of Representatives from Burlington, was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941, the son of a paint salesman who immigrated to this country as a young man. His mother raised her two sons in a small apartment while his father earned a steady but limited income. Sanders' family circumstances, in which money was often tight, heavily influenced his understanding about the financial difficulties that face many working class families. His older brother, Larry, lives in England where he recently retired as a social worker.

On January 3, 1991, when Bernie Sanders was sworn in as Vermont's at-large member in the House of Representatives, history was made. Sanders became the first Independent elected to Congress in 40 years. He has since been re-elected five times. He is the longest-serving Independent in the history of the House of Representatives. Patrick Leahy, U.S. Senator, of Burlington was elected to the United States Senate in 1974 and remains the only Democrat elected to this office from Vermont. He was also the youngest Senator (34) elected from the Green Mountain State and is now serving his fifth term.

State government in Vermont has three branches: executive, legislative and judicial.

Voters elect six state officers: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General. All have two-year terms.

Vermont has 30 state senators and 150 members of the House

Vermont has 14 counties, each of which has resources, such as sheriffs, specific to each.  They are: Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orange, Orleans, Rutland, Washington, Windam and Windsor.

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you my vision for the future.

I want Vermont to be a place where every person can fulfill their highest potential right here, where they can enjoy our extraordinary way of life and have a good job. No Vermonter should have to leave the state to chase hope and opportunity.

I will use my position as Governor to lead Vermont on a new course of economic vitality. The focus of my strategy will be to improve Vermont’s job climate, transition Vermont’s economy into the 21st century, insist on fiscal responsibility, support the working poor by helping them escape poverty and gain assets, invest in key industries like agriculture and tourism, improve our infrastructure, lower health care costs and improve education and workforce training.

As Governor, I will provide a steady hand at the helm of state government. My vision for Vermont’s economic future is not one of quick fixes or government gimmicks. My strategy is one of careful consideration, common sense planning and prioritizing, and a new role for government that puts power back in the hands of people.

Information technology will play an important role in the implementation of many key initiatives. Vermont must adjust to the technology driven economy. It is imperative that the state’s communications infrastructure be upgraded. Our ability to create a modern, affordable and universally accessible telecommunications network is crucial to the state’s economic future.

Employers are placing a higher emphasis on the availability and affordability of broadband access when making location or job creation decisions. I will provide the leadership necessary to upgrade Vermont’s telecommunications network, including promoting the deployment of broadband capability throughout Vermont and facilitating the deployment of wireless networks to bring choice to Vermonters.

Many Vermonters would like to be able to obtain state services online. As Governor, I will make the use of technology in state government a priority, facilitating transactions for individuals and employers. Through continued development of Vermont’s agency web sites, fewer Vermonters will have to wait in line and will simply get online for the state service they need.

As we go forward, we will continue to add useful information here.

Thank you for visiting.

Jim Douglas
